Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the first 2+2 discussions between India and Australia as "extremely constructive" on Saturday, saying it was a symbol of the two nations' growing strategic convergence.

He also complimented his colleague, Scott Morrison, for focusing on the two counties' complete strategic cooperation.

S Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister, and Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, met with Marise Payne and Peter Dutton, the Australian equivalents, for the 2+2 discussions.

Later, the two Australian ministers paid Modi a courtesy call, according to a PMO statement.

Modi tweeted, "Was happy to meet Ministers @MarisePayne and @PeterDutton_MP. The 1st Ministerial 2+2 Dialogue between India and Australia was very productive. I thank my friend @ScottMorrisonMP for his focus on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our nations."

A number of issues were discussed during the ministerial meeting, according to the PMO, including the possibility of further expanding bilateral strategic and economic cooperation, both countries' common approach to the Indo-Pacific region, and the growing importance of the Indian community in Australia as a human-bridge between the two sides.

Modi repeated his offer to Morrison to visit India at his earliest convenience, praising him for his role in swiftly expanding the comprehensive strategic relationship established between the two nations last year.
