BEST ACTRESS CANNES 2024: The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival marked a significant moment for India. Alongside Shyam Benegal's Manthan receiving a special screening almost 48 years after its release, and numerous celebrities and influencers dazzling on the red carpet, Indian films and actors garnered attention across various categories at the festival. Now, a notable win has been secured by an Indian actor at Cannes 2024.
Anasuya Sengupta, a native of Kolkata, clinched the Un Certain Regard Prize for best actress cannes 2024 for her role in "The Shameless." Directed and written by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov, the film centers around Renuka, portrayed by Anasuya, who escapes a Delhi brothel after fatally shooting a police officer. The narrative also features Omara Shetty as Renuka's love interest.

Reflecting on the announcement of her film's inclusion in the Un Certain Regard section, Anasuya shared her exhilaration, stating, "I received the news when Konstantin sent me a link to the press conference announcing the Cannes official selections. When our film’s name was announced, I jumped out of the chair with ecstasy!"
In addition to Anasuya's best actress cannes 2024 achievement, two Indian films, "Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know" and "Bunnyhood," secured top positions in the La Cinef Selection at Cannes.
"Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know," a Kannada short film directed by Chidananda Naik, a student from the Film and Television Institute of India, claimed the first place. Naik drew inspiration from a popular folktale, expressing his ambition to transform Indian myths and folktales into cinematic experiences.

"Bunnyhood," directed by Mansi Maheshwari from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, studying in the UK, secured the third position. Maheshwari's inspiration for the film stemmed from a childhood incident involving her mother fabricating an appendix surgery.
As the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival drew to a close on May 25th, these victories showcased India's vibrant cinematic landscape on the global stage.
